How Exercise Diminishes Stress

Studies have shown that exercise can benefit you from a variety of psychological and physical effects, including depression and anxiety; and that it can be even more effective than anti-anxiety medication. It does this in many different ways. Exercise gives your body what it needs to defeat stress: a physical exercise that helps us get out of the fight-or-flight mode. I have been walking or biking nearly every day for the past three weeks and I am feeling much less anxious.

When we exercise, levels of different stress hormones rise, such as cortisol and adrenailine, which go up for a short time while exercising. And at the same time, these stress hormones also rise when we are psychologically stressed.

The exact same physiological response.

Regular physical exercise teaches the body to recover faster from this effect. It's like you are conditioning your body to sluff off your everyday stress.

Next time you are feeking overwhelmed or anxious, do one of the following things:

  • 2 minutes of body weight exercises with dumbbells
  • Quick dancing to one of your favorite songs [ mine is any Janet Jackson song ]
  • A ten-minute brisk walk around the block
Once you do this, observe how you feel from after exercising to when you started. Amost always, with this small side-step, you will feel better.

  1. Exercise is by far the most positive thing I am doing for myself on a daily basis. YouTube has some wonderful programs that you can do at home too. I have also incorporated daily meditation and mindfulness. Music is a great healer too!
