Can We Create Antivirals to Deal with the Next Pandemic?

Image
Dr. David Ho currently is working at Columbia University with several colleagues to develop antiviral drugs. Ho was one of the premier researchers that helped to create the initial HIV cocktail that has saved hundreds of thousands. He is also good friends with Jack Ma, the CEO of China-based Alibaba.com, and who gave Ho's foundation a $2.1 - million dollar grant. When asked, what will the next global pandemic might be? he answered, "If you'd asked me that three or four months ago, I would have said influenza." The New Yorker author, Matthew Hutson, asks in this article (link below) "Could bacteria do us in?" Looking at human history outbreaks of various plagues and pandemics have killed millions. Amesh Adalja, Johns Hopkins researcher said: "Anti-biotics took bacteria off the table as a global biological risk for the most part."  He went on to say that  prions , which are responsible for mad cow disease are mostly avoidable by not eating...

A Pandemic Moment

While I was self-quaratining [ I hope that's a real phrase]  I wondered what the actual name meant. And low and behold I was reading The New Yorker today, an article called "The Spread," by Elizabeth Kolbert and read that the  ". . . word "quarantine" comes from the Italian quaranta, meaning "forty." The article went on to say that the quarantine scenario has specific attributes that started long before people knew that they were practicing it. Most of Merriam-Webster's definition of quarantine has to do with ships coming into port; that irony was not lost on me. But Webster further states:   a restraint upon the activities or communication of persons or the transport of goods designed to prevent the spread of disease or pests. Kolbert states that the period of 40 days was required to stay safe. plus the number forty is constantly mentioned in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. Items such as the numnber forty being days fo...

How Exercise Diminishes Stress

Image
How Exercise Diminishes Stress Studies have shown that exercise can benefit you from a variety of psychological and physical effects, including depression and anxiety; and that it can be even more effective than anti-anxiety medication. It does this in many different ways. Exercise gives your body what it needs to defeat stress: a physical exercise that helps us get out of the fight-or-flight mode. I have been walking or biking nearly every day for the past three weeks and I am feeling much less anxious. When we exercise, levels of different stress hormones rise, such as cortisol and adrenailine , which go up for a short time while exercising. And at the same time, these stress hormones also rise when we are psychologically stressed. The exact same physiological response . Regular physical exercise teaches the body to recover faster from this effect. It's like you are conditioning your body to sluff off your everyday stress. Next time you are feeking overwhelme...

The Stress Solution

I have been either walking or biking every day since all of this Coronavirus has started. Because I have been doing daily aerobic activity I have been sleeping better, having better daily blood sugar results, and less anxiety We all are going through daily MSDs ( Micro-Stress-Doses ) every minute of every day due to this virus. Human beings are not constructed to deal with MSDs in a pro-longed state. When that happens it can turn into chronic diseases like arthritis, cardiac disease, diabetes 2, depression, high blood pressure and other chroniuc conditions. That being said there are things that you can do to minimize the effects  of MSD's.  I have been reading the book, " The Stress Solution ," by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, and I am totally supportive of buying and reading this book, and I get no payback on this. It's a great book and I guarantee you would benefit from Dr. Chatterjee's sage advice. In this book Dr. Chatterjee talks about a complete re...
